Description

The Intergrain Universal Oil is an oil-based treatment that protects and nourishes all timber species from the inside out. This is a deeply penetrating oil, that achieves a clear finish, never flakes, blisters, or peels and aids in the prevention of warping, cupping, and splitting. When you use the Intergrain Universal Timber Oil, you are selecting a product that will gradually fade the timber to a natural grey over time, or it can be coloured with the Intergrain Colour Additive we also offer here at Rustic World Timbers for a longer-lasting finish. Intergrain Universal Oil is the complete protection system for new and weathered timbers, providing a deep penetration that works to nourish and protect. This oil is great for use both inside and outside your home or commercial building and is suitable for a wide range of surfaces.

In order to achieve the greatest results, it is highly recommendable to clean the timber first in order to remove dirt, droppings, and stains. Once the timber is clean, it is time to apply the Intergrain Universal Timber Oil. The oil can be applied with a brush, roller, or pump sprayer, and should be worked into the timber until it is evenly distributed. If you are using a brush or roller, it is best to work in the direction of the grain to avoid leaving brush strokes. Once the oil has been applied, you should allow it to penetrate for at least 30 minutes before wiping away any excess. You should then allow the timber to dry for at least 12 hours before using or walking on it.

With Intergrain Universal Timber Oil, the maintenance time varies widely according to many factors including the age and porosity of the wood, species, situation, and exposure to the weather. This premium product should be reapplied when the timber has lost its water resistance and water is soaking into the timber.

Surface Preparation

The instructions below offer general preparation guidelines.

  • New bare timber, new pre-oiled timber (including mineral oil), rejuvenate bare grey/weathered:
For best results, we recommend cleaning timber with Intergrain UltraPrep™ Timber Cleaner to ensure the surface is free from debris, droppings and stains.
  • Maintain bare grey/weathered timber:
Do not use a timber cleaner, ensure the surface is clean by washing it with water.
  • Existing coating in poor condition:
Remove coating by using a combination of Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover and power washing. Then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.
  • Paints, varnishes or coatings in varied conditions:
Paints, varnishes or coatings that have deteriorated unevenly, remove all existing coating by using a coatings stripper or sanding back to bare timber. Then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.

Important: If mould is present or if timber is in a mould-prone area, use Intergrain UltraPrep Mould Killer to remove surface mould effectively as the first step of preparing the timber for coating.

Application

For best performance, apply at least 1 coat to all sides of the timber prior to installation.

  1. Remove excess water from the surface and allow timber to thoroughly dry before coating.
  2. Stir Intergrain Universal Timber Oil thoroughly before and during use with a flat blade stirrer.
  3. OPTIONAL: For a longer-lasting finish, add Intergrain Colour Additive to Intergrain Universal Timber Oil in your selected colour, at the ratios recommended on back of pack. Stir thoroughly to incorporate colour evenly. When using two different tinted cans of the same colour, it is recommended that the product be mixed together in the same container.
  4. Apply Intergrain Universal Timber Oil generously using the Intergrain Deckbrush™ (recommended), flat deck applicator, paintbrush, roller or spray (air assisted airless or airless). Back brush to help even penetration. Ensure edges and end grain are fully coated.
  5. Allow the oil to penetrate for 30-60 minutes before wiping off any excess with a dry applicator or cloth.
  6. Allow to dry for 24 hours, then apply the second coat following the same application process as the first coat.

Important: All timber is required to be free from dust, mould and site contaminants prior to coating. Follow all relevant product label instructions when using Intergrain products.

Maintenance

  • Maintenance time varies widely according to many factors including the age and porosity of the wood, species, situation and exposure to the weather.
