Description

Appearance

Silvertop Ash features a narrow sapwood that blends seamlessly with the heartwood. The heartwood is typically brown, sometimes with a pinkish hue, and often showcases interlocked grain with distinct growth rings. It has a medium texture and is characterized by the presence of gum veins, pinhole borer markings, and pencil streaks.

Common Applications

Silvertop Ash is predominantly used in construction, especially for timber framing. It is a popular choice for building frameworks on the south coast and tablelands of NSW due to its strength, durability, and fire resistance. Additional applications include:

  • Flooring
  • Furniture
  • High-end joinery
  • Vehicle construction
  • Handles
  • Fence posts
  • Cases
  • Chemical pulp

Workability

Silvertop Ash is a robust and moderately durable timber that is relatively easy to work with. It machines well and can be processed using standard woodworking tools. The timber splits easily along the rays, a feature that made it popular for roof shakes among pioneers. It accepts most coatings and is excellent for nailing and screwing. While it sands well, it tends to splinter and is suitable for steam bending.

Source and Availability

Silvertop Ash is found in New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania, and is commonly available throughout Australia, particularly in these regions. The timber is sourced from native forests
